How to construct a Staircase
This guide will walk you through how to assemble your staircase and give you a few handy tips! Below are a few 3D images to help you with assembly, click image to enlarge.Step #1
Start by dry wedging a tread and riser at each end of the staircase, now place the other string on and dry wedge this. This allows you to lay the staircase flat, now slot in all of the other treads and risers. If your staircase has newel posts you will have numbered treads - be sure to put these in the correct place.
Step #2
The next step is to board and clamp the staircase before we wedge all of the treads and risers. To do this put some loose boards either side of the staircase stringers to protect them, now clamp over the width. Be sure your staircase is square before tightening up all clamps, to do this place one edge of your square against the stringer and let the other run down the riser (you will need to make sure the tread and riser sit fully down in the stringer trenching).
Step #3
Now remove your dry wedges, apply a generous amount of glue to the whole set and slot them in behind the treads. Drive in the wedges making sure all of the treads are completely down in the trenching, now do the same with the risers.
Step #4
Now you have all of your wedges in place you can chisel off the tops, next we need to fix the risers to the treads (your risers will all be pre-drilled to take the screws). Glue the blocks in place with generous amounts of glue, it is very important that these are fixed properly and the glue is allowed to set.
Staircase Tip
Allow the glue to fully set on all components before using the staircase, it is crucial to ensure the blocks fixing the treads & risers are firmly in place. If the glue isn't given time to set the staircase may squeak!
