How to a Staircase

After fitting newel posts & any loose treads we are ready to fit the staircase, this may involve making a few cuts to suit your trimmer joist & skirting.

Step #1

To fit the staircase you will need to measure your joist thickness, and make a few cuts on your newel post to allow it to hang on your trimmer joist. To achieve the horizontal measurement shown on your staircase plan you will need to cut your wall string and newel post right back to the riser, underneeth the nosing. When you make these cuts you will be removing the top riser wedges so you may need to secure this in place with screws.

Step #2

If you haven't done so already you will need to make the skirting cut before we fix the staircase. Mark the cut with a square, making it slightly taller than your skirting height.

Step #3

Now drill and screw / bolt through your stringer into the wall. Make 4-5 good fixings into your brickwork. You may also want to bolt your top newel post to the trimmer to ensure good fixture.

Its always a good idea to dry assemble the staircase components before you apply any glue so you can get to grips with how everything fits together. After every stage make sure all components are plum and securely in place.
