How to fit kite winder treads
Below is a run through on how to fit winder treads. Everything is pre cut and ready to be fixed, the posts & winders have been dry fitted in our workshop. This guide also includes a few images, click image to enlarge.Step #1
You may wish to dry assemble the winders first of all to get to grips with how everything fits. If you haven't already you will need to follow the fitting newel guide. Once your post is on you can slide the winder treads into place.
Step #2
Once you are happy everything is in place and square you can glue the winder wedges and hammer them into the trenching. Make sure the winders are fully down in the stringer.
Step #3
The wing is tenoned on 1 end, you will need to glue the tenon and slide it into the mortice slot. You may also wish to drill and screw it into place from behind the wall string. The last winder is glued and wedged into place as before - next step is to fit the risers!
Step #4
You will need to measure and mark the winder risers, be sure to double check your lines before making the cuts, dry fit the risers to make sure they accurately fit. Glue and wedge them into place, as before screw the risers to the treads. Apply generous amounts of glue on the blocks and push them into place, you may wish to pin them into the treads while the glue sets. Remember, dont use the staircase untill this glue is set!
Staircase Tip
Its always a good idea to dry assemble the winder box before you apply any glue so you can get to grips with how everything fits together. After every stage make sure all components are plum and securely in place.
