Our journey began as a partnership of three carpenters working from a small workshop in Stoke-on-Trent. Today, we’re one of the UK’s leading staircase manufacturers celebrating our 30th year of success and growth. As we mark this incredible milestone, it's the perfect time to look back on our journey so far, celebrate the achievements and eagerly anticipate the future.
A Transformational Tale
In 1993, StairBox started as a small family-owned carpentry business in Stoke on Trent. When sons Tom and Alex joined in 2004, they saw the potential in specialising in staircase manufacturing. Their business idea – to make stairs easy - was simple, but laid the foundation for something much bigger.
Over the past three decades, the company has undergone an incredible transformation. From making timber staircases individually by hand, we now have the capacity to produce over 200 staircases every day, delivering them nationwide alongside a comprehensive range of stair parts.
Driven by Technology and Innovation
Our commitment to innovation and technology has been one of the key factors behind our success. In 2006, we became industry pioneers by introducing our first CNC machine and revolutionising the way staircases were manufactured. This move not only enhanced precision but significantly increased our productivity.
2009 saw us take another leap into the future by launching the StairBuilder®™ – the first ever online staircase design tool. This user-friendly digital software empowered our customers to design and customise their staircases at the click of a button, making the process more accessible and convenient than ever before.
Unstoppable Expansion
Our ethos isn’t just about embracing technology; our growing reputation for excellent customer service and quality staircase solutions has also led to further expansion.
In 2015, we made a bold move by adding an additional 100,000 square feet to our manufacturing facility to accommodate the rapid growth of the business. This expansion not only allowed for greater production capacity but also created more job opportunities in the local community.
In 2022, we took an even bigger step by opening a second manufacturing facility, doubling our operation to 200,000 square feet. This expansion also included a new trade counter and showroom, allowing us to serve our customers even better.
Joining Forces with Grafton Group
2020 saw a significant milestone in the StairBox journey as we became part of Grafton Group plc, an international distributor of building materials to trade customers. The strength of our operational expertise, efficient production process, a culture dedicated to continuous improvement and strong growth potential played a pivotal role in the deal.
The strategic partnership with Grafton Group, whose footprint extends to Ireland and the Netherlands, unlocked international expansion opportunities.
