SpaceSaver Loft Stairs

A SpaceSaver staircase, or paddle flight, has alternating staircase treads which means the stairs require far less going – or horizontal floor space - to get to the same rise compared to a normal flight.
However, SpaceSaver stairs also have additional requirements within Building Regulations which can limit their use, so it is worth considering all of your options before making a decision on your loft stairs construction.

Standard Construction Loft Stairs

With careful planning and design, it may be possible to access your loft conversion via a standard construction staircase. Utilising turns and winder treads, a staircase can fit into a compact space whilst still meeting Building Regulations.
It's especially important to watch out for head height problems to make sure your new loft stairs are fully compliant.

What is a SpaceSaver loft staircase?
A SpaceSaver staircase, also known as a paddle flight, has alternating treads which means the stairs require far less going – or horizontal floor space - to get to the same rise compared to a normal flight. You can find out more about our SpaceSaver loft stairs here.
Do you offer loft staircases with a turn
We don't offer spacesaver loft staircase with a turn. Spacesaver loft stairs are normally used when there isn’t enough floor area to accommodate a standard staircase, and so a straight spacesaver flight is the only option.
Can I change the length of spacesaver loft stairs?
You can shorten the overall length of a spacesaver staircase by using fewer treads in the design. If you want to make the staircase longer, you can add more treads in. To ensure you stay within UK building regulations we don’t allow you to modify the individual tread depth on the Loft Stairs Designer, we can only manufacture within the set parameters on the design tool for this type of staircase.
Can I add balustrade on both sides of my spacesaver loft stairs?
We can only offer balustrade on one side of your loft staircase, the other side would need to be fitted against a wall.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a SpaceSaver staircase?
A SpaceSaver staircase requires less floorspace than a standard construction flight. However, SpaceSaver stairs have additional requirements within Building Regulations (as per Document K) which limit their use. Therefore, if you have sufficient space available to satisfy Building Regs, we would always recommend opting for a compact standard construction staircase as opposed to this kind of loft stairs.
What materials are your SpaceSaver stairs available in?
If using our online Loft Stairs Designer, our SpaceSaver stairs are made of pine with birch plywood treads and risers; posts are square with flat post caps, spindles are 41mm square and rails are Cheshire Pattern. However, if you would like a different spindle, glass balustrade or oak posts, please contact our team who will be able to provide a quote.
Do your loft stairs come pre-painted?
All of our stairs are sent out pre-sanded but unfinished, for you to apply an oil or paint colour of your own choice.
Will you come to my home to measure for my new loft staircase?
We offer an onsite measuring service, however there's a lot of information about measuring for your staircase on our website. You can then transfer the dimensions to our online Loft Stairs designer tool to create your design. Our team are also extremely skilled at offering assistance over the phone and will be able to help you find the required measurements.
Where do you deliver to?
We currently deliver to mainland UK only, however in the past we have shipped to ports for customers to then arrange their own onward shipping.
How accurate are the sizes on the Loft Stairs Designer?
All staircases are manufactured to the exact sizes shown on the Loft Stairs Designer, however as timber is a natural product it can swell slightly in different temperature and humidity conditions (usually around 5mm in the width). We always recommend leaving an additional 10mm surrounding your staircase for fitting purposes.

SpaceSaver stairs or paddle flights can provide an ideal solution when a standard construction staircase simply won't fit in your available space. Our Loft Stairs design tool makes ordering SpaceSaver stairs for your loft or attic conversion easy.

Simply enter your measurements and make your design choices from the options on the left hand side. The interactive staircase image will update with every choice you make, as will the price.

As standard, loft stairs ordered via the Loft Stairs Designer are made of pine with birch plywood treads and risers; posts are square with flat post caps, spindles are 41mm square and rails are Cheshire Pattern. However, if you would like a different spindle profile, glass balustrade or oak posts, please contact our team who will be able to provide a quote.

You can spread the cost of your loft stairs with our new "Pay In 3" service through PayPal, which gives you the ability to split your purchase into three interest-free payments.
